Free meals are now available for every New Yorker

Geena Garcia, Policy Intern

April 6, 2020

Beginning Friday April 3, NYC Department of Education’s Meal Hubs will distribute three free meals a day for any New Yorker, including adults. This is an expansion of the previous operation that provided meals for school children and their families.

Children and families will be able to pick up meals between 7:30 AM and 11:30 AM, and adults who don’t have children will be able to pick up meals between 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM.

No registration, ID, or documentation is required, and no one will be turned away. Parents and guardians are not required to bring their children in order to pick up meals for them. Vegetarian and halal meals are available.

We thank Mayor de Blasio and the Department of Education for this step in the right direction of combating food insecurity in New York City, especially in these unprecedented times.

Please visit https://www.schools.nyc.gov/freemeals  or text “NYC FOOD” to 877-877 to find a Meal Hub location near you, and to view the monthly menus.
